![]() ![]() ![]() The entire diplomacy element of the randomized, user-generated games has been removed from Warlords IV, meaning that you're automatically at war with all other players in singleplayer or multiplayer mode. Heroes no longer cast spells, though a new unit we'll discuss later can. For starters, quests have greatly been simplified. Let's begin with these, since Warlords veterans might be more surprised by what's been left out of the game, rather than what's been added to the mix. It might almost be called Warlords Back-to-the-Basics not because it's a return to the original title I reviewed, but because of the elimination of a few major improvements found in Warlords II and III. It's also the first developed after SSG split down the middle, with the fantasy-oriented products going to Melbourne-based Infinite Interactive. Warlords IV is the fourth in this series. They built upon this, and were eventually able to infiltrate our American defenses with its successors, Warlords II and Warlords III: Darklords Rising. While other SSG titles didn't make much of a dent in the United States, the Australian developers easily established a strategic beachhead with Warlords. But it was a very pleasantly applied skin, and drew enough attention from reviewers and players for everybody to note the exceptionally strong AI. It was, of course, only skin deep once you looked beneath the surface, Warlords still showed its board strategic warfare board game ancestry in its unit values, combat mode, stacks, and hexes. There were plenty of turn-based, combat-oriented strategy games for the PC before Warlords, and some were even fantasy-themed but none of them quite caught that atmosphere. What set that original Warlords apart from its companions was the addition of attractive fantasy trappings. I received the first one as part of a review package of SSG games around that time most of the others accompanying it were either complex arcade titles, or war-based strategic combat. Warlords has been a turn-based, combat-oriented strategy series since 1990.

The video may be overblown and clichéd, but the song itself provides a breath of fresh air in the current staid and cluttered Top-40 musical landscape. It's not witty, or even trying to be, but heartfelt and uncomplicated Drake at his best, with Majid Jordan's Jai Paul BTSTU -esque croons in all the right places. ![]() Hold On We're Going Home is possibly the best thing he's ever done, the heavy hitting 4/4 kick and snare covered by reverbed organ providing an anthemic feel. There's the usual R&B crooning present in spades, but Drake always knows the right time and place to utilise a hook, something that is rightly praised about his output and provides his edge. Just look at the furor and discussion surrounding Kendrick Lamar's Control verse, but at the end of the day isn't that what rap should be about? Striving for perfection and being better than your peers, even if you have to metaphorically "kill" your fellows to reach that hallowed place? Drake’s raps never quite reach the heights of Lamar's: such is his truly mind blowing cadence and ability to write verses that posses triple meanings upon analysis, but Drake’s flexibility is his weapon and that's always been his strength, which is evident throughout the album. " Niggas talk more than bitches these days". Drake seems a bit too proud when he repeats this epiphany and proclaims, "Just let that shit sink in" on sparse cut Own It, but it's the truth. He may not be the most talented rapper out there, perhaps the Gary Neville of hip-hop (a bizarre image I know), but he's built himself an empire complete with the trophies to go with it where 40 is his co-ruler and enabler of his visions. That's Drake to the core, a perfectionist unafraid of putting the hours and work in to achieve his goals. Just before the third kicks in, Drake exclaims, "How much time is this nigga spendin' on the intro?” and then spits over the best beat of the three. Proceedings are kicked off with Tuscan Leather, fairly unique in the fact that the beat doesn't just switch once, but twice. Nothing Was the Same is somewhat a different prospect, further refined and with less fat on its bones, clocking in at a more reasonable 13 tracks totaling under 60 minutes compared to Take Care's 18 and 80. With the help of Noah “40” Shebib, a more considered approach and a cornucopia of producing talent, Take Care had near perfect command of mood in its tonal shifts, demonstrating both Graham's refined rapping confidence and his ear for a hook. Drake’s boast on pre-album single 5AM in Toronto about his ability to make song a hit seems perfectly reasonable looking at these statistics: just how many artists have recently ridden his coattails (presumably designer) to fame aided by one of his guest verses?īucking the trend of difficult sophomore releases, Take Care was in fact a superior product to its predecessor and rushed debut So Far Gone. The R8 manages to offer great responsiveness on both K and Ka. The V1 Gen2 is lightning quick on Ka, but slower on K band due to its filtering. When it comes to reacting to brief alerts, the Redline 360c is sluggish on K band and needs to be segmented to just 2/5/8 to get a reasonable level of responsiveness. To me, that’s what sets the R8 apart from the competition.Ĭompared to the R7, the R8 offers longer range on 33.8, 34.7, 35.5, and K band as advertised.Ĭompared to the V1 Gen2 and Redline 360c, things vary depending on the radar frequency and settings, but of course all those detectors offer long range performance. I like that it offers both long range detection as well as very quick responsiveness to brief instant on alerts, including with filters enabled. ![]() In short, I’ve found the R8 to be a top performer on K band as well as all of the Ka band frequencies. You can check out my R8 long range test results here. Thanks to a new dual LNA design, plus an upgraded condenser lens, the R8 is one of the best performing radar detectors you can buy. Longer range is one of the main improvements over the R7 which was already a strong performance. I wish the R8 felt a bit more solid, but once I have it mounted, I don’t really notice it. In terms of build quality, button feel is slightly improved over the R7, though the R8 still feels a little more plasticky than the Redline 360c and V1 Gen2. ![]() Get a laser jammer if you need laser protection, especially from the rear.) I’m just saying it doesn’t make a difference in practice. (I’m not defending Uniden’s design decision. A number of people mentioned this concern and while technically yes that’s true, for all intents and purposes purposes, rear detection in a radar detector is all but useless in practice. Several beta testers otherwise reported issues with the R8 pressing up against their headliner.Īdditionally the front of the detector is now taller which blocks visibility to the rear laser sensor behind it. If you’re upgrading from an R7 that you’ve mounted up by your RVM, you may need to lower the mount for the R8 so that you have room to stick your fingers in and press the buttons. The big trade-off with this design is that the face of the detector is now physically taller. I find it much easier now to tap while driving. I always found it awkward to hit the mute button on the side of the R7, but with the R8 it feels like the mute button is in the perfect spot. Uniden has moved the mute button to the front of the detector which is a very welcome change. Also, as always, this is not a paid or sponsored review. It has firmware 1.22 which is very close to the production firmware 1.23 that will be shipped on retail R8’s and should offer the same performance and overall experience as what we’ve been testing, according to what I’ve been told. I’ve been mostly driving with the production R8. One has pre-production hardware, the other production. Note: I’ve tested two R8’s, both provided by Uniden. If you haven’t already watched it, make sure you check out my R8 introduction video first going over all the improvements added from the R7 to the R8.Īfter you watch this video, you’ll be up to speed with the R8 itself and now we can move onto real world experiences running it. The Uniden R8 ( $699) is essentially a souped up Uniden R7 ( $499) with the same performance enhancements and features that have been added to the Uniden R4 ( $449). The Uniden R8 is now available for pre-order in very limited quantities (more detectors will be available after the first initial batch) and so I wanted to go ahead and share my personal experiences and test results with the R8, as well as some reports from other fellow beta testers. It’s been my daily driver since November and I’ve been enjoying it so much that even after finishing beta testing and creating this Uniden R8 review, I continue choosing the R8 as my go-to radar detector of choice. ![]() The Uniden R8 is an impressive new radar detector. ![]() Unlike most astronomy nerds, though, Knoll has actually influenced the way space has looked in some of its most high-profile appearances on the big screen. A large chunk of this movie is just Anakin whining and complaining that things "aren't fair" in Christensen's dull monotone, and then aggressively cringey romantic scenes with him and Padme. Even when I've seen him in good movies, he's awful, I don't like him. That just makes it even more annoying when she falls head over heels for the angst king himself Anakin. God damn it do I hate Anakin and Padme! Padme's actually a more competent character than I remember her being, and I like seeing her hold her own in the action set pieces. Maybe they're making up for all the talking, but when stuff does go down, it's fun for a little while but gets boring fast. Some of the action pieces actually feel like they go on forever. When we do have action scenes, they're okay, but just okay. It all feels like exposition and set up for future entries rather than its own thing, and it just makes the movie kind of boring. I'll even make a modest defense for some of Anakin's moments of turning, like the bit with the Tusken Raiders that's actually more well put together than I remember. Jango Fett is still cool, if not a little underutilized. Obi Wan's investigating is a little more interesting, even if it all feels like vague set up for the inevitable TV show. But there are things in it that are okay, and better than I remember. Okay look, I spent years hating this movie and building up that loathing, and watching it again…yeah, it's earned. Just TRY to watch this again and tell me any other entry in the main saga didn't at least do SOMETHING better.
